Code of Conduct
We want the Defeating the Bullies and Trolls in the Library (#DTBL19) symposium to be a welcoming, supportive, comfortable, and brave space for all participants, and we will work to make it a respectful and harassment-free environment. We will not tolerate harassment of symposium participants in any form.
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, country of origin, age, disability, physical appearance, body size, religion, veteran status or other protected class status; discriminatory or offensive images in public spaces; intimidation; stalking; harassing or unwanted photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks or other events; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants violating the code of conduct may be warned or asked to leave by symposium organizers.
Because of the subject matter of today’s events, speakers and participants may discuss sensitive, discriminatory, offensive, or triggering topics. If you are speaking today as panelist or participant, please be mindful of the impact and effect of your words. If at any point during the symposium you feel that a break from the conversation would be personally beneficial, you are welcome to step out, take care of yourself, and re-enter as you are able.
Recording/Social Media Policy
We see the symposium as a place to share information, not only with other participants but also with those who may not be able to attend. Given that the conversations for the day are centered around bullying and trolling in librarianship, we are being mindful of what and how event attendees may wish to share their learning. While responsible sharing and reporting out from the event is encouraged via social media and other platforms, organizers ask that attendees refrain from directly quoting any fellow attendee without their express permission that they are on the record and comfortable being quoted and identified beyond the event space. We also ask that pictures and presenters' slides not be shared online without permission.
Similarly, if you do not want your picture taken, your words to be recorded for either photographs or words to be attributed to you, please let other participants know that. Please be thoughtful, respectful, and ethical with your photographs, recording, and sharing.
Reporting Harassment or Violations
If at any point during the symposium you feel uncomfortable or harassed, or if you witness any violations of these policies, please reach out to anyone who introduces themselves at the start of the day as a symposium organizer or member of the library staff.
